How Can We Properly Measure How Well You Are?

How can we measure wellness instead of illness? The common use of lab work-ups in medicine today is to know if you are ill.  There are several drawbacks to this approach to your well being:

  1. This use is usually reactive to presenting complaints meaning you are already ill and it was usually unnecessary,
  2. Too often blood work-ups are not predictive of whether you will get well or not,
  3. Annual physicals require little patient participation in the remediation of causes, while they may certainly help to monitor medication use that might prevent worsening
  4. But medical blood work is not used preventively. Instead, already existing illnesses are being sought out for management, when we could be working toward the remediation of indications that illness is on the horizon to avoid its occurrence entirely.

There is a better way to use lab testing to get and keep you well. It is called Functional Medicine Assessment (FMA).

What Should We Know About You To Keep You Well?

Eleven “Biomarkers of Health” have been identified to be a great way to begin to get leverage over the prevention of illness and the creation of wellness. But we then must ask different questions than our sickness care system asks: “What should we measure to find out if a person’s physiology is trending towards or away from homeostatic balance or wellness”?

The answer that FMA provides is:

  • in the form of 11 tests
  • from which is constructed a graphic representation of your state of well being plus
  • a workable set of safe natural recommendations we can use to rebalance each variable that is found to be out of the wellness zone.

A FMA (Functional Medicine Assessment) uses FDA cleared equipment to measures these 11 biomarkers of health.

How We Find Out How To Get & Keep You Well

Checking these 11 key health antecedents, using only your urine and saliva, FMA helps us build a map. We’ll then use this map to guide our efforts to get your biochemistry back into the balanced wellness zone, preventively, before stress moves your body any further into the adaptive lab test ranges labeled as “diagnosed” disease.

As we uncover whether you have already been pushed off balance by stress and are now running adaptive versus homeostatic physiology, we can then use these revelations about your hidden unmet needs to help you first attain, then preserve your wellness rather than focus as does our current approach on how to react to your illness.

What Do You Need To Assure You and Your Family of Wellness?

There are four “P’s” that are vital to the transition we all must make to create well families. These characteristics are the opposite of our current sickness care system. Our approach must be:

  • Predictive, allowing us to be well guided, empowering us to be
  • Proactive as well as
  • Participatory and
  • Preventive

Having all of the four P’s needed to restore your care and our entire sickness industry to a wellness driven system puts health creation and sustenance back in its proper place, as our system’s primary focus and its most sought after outcome.

Even when it is too late for prevention, when you’re already ill, FMA will point out which of the biomarkers of health to support to restore you to well being.

The 11 Biomarkers of Health:
  1. Alkaline Reserve - an indicator of your risk for osteoporosis by measuring how much bone building reserve you have stored in your “tank”, a better and cheaper way to look at your real risk for osteoporosis.
  2. Oxidative Stress - oxidation from free radicals breaks your body down and contributes to over 60 major degenerative diseases including: 1) cancer, 2) heart disease and 3) strokes, so you really need to be on top of this your whole life.
  3. Electrolytes - vital fuel for the energy we need to avoid fatigue, these are the main factors needed to turn on the rest of our energy producing machinery (i.e. the needed co-factors).
  4. Carbohydrates - efficiently handling carbs (in conjunction with not eating too many) gives us steady energy to avoid mid-day crashes, carb slumps after every meal and to prevent the development of mishandling carbs which we then see develop into hypoglycemia, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, adrenal exhaustion, female hormone trouble, fat, fatigue and depression.
  5. Protein Metabolism - good digestion and assimilation of protein is needed to provide abundant muscle formation, build your digestive and all other enzymes and to keep your mood and sleep regulating neurotransmitters well supplied, prevent you from feeling bloated after meals and assist you in staying lean, which is regulated largely by your muscles.
  6. Cellular Respiration - how efficiently are you transporting the oxygen from your blood to the cell furnaces that burn it, how well are your cells then making their full output of 38 ATP molecules (n.b. ATP is burned to make 95% of all cellular energy) versus only 2 ATP’s at their worst, adding another dimension to restoring your natural energy levels, beyond what you can recover when we have normalized your carb and protein metabolism and your adrenal function.
  7. Hydration - to run your cells at their highest efficiency you need to pour a river of liquid solvent, water, through you daily, about ½ your body weight in pounds, as ounces of spring or filtered re-mineralized water. We can measure how well your cells are holding water inside, how close to fully hydrated they remain, thus helping to bring your cell’s chemistry to high efficiency by keeping them more like plump grapes rather than dehydrated like raisins.
  8. Liver Toxicity - despite all efforts at exercise and dieting, if your liver itself is toxic then the waste it should have been eliminating can’t be, so your body shunts the toxins, 97% of which are fat soluble, to be stored in fat deposits created for this purpose, making this marker especially important for healthy fat loss. We are what we eat, assimilate and what we DON’T eliminate.
  9. Kidney Stress - the remaining 3% of liver toxins that the liver converts to water soluble form can be properly discharged by the kidneys only when they are in the green wellness zone.
  10. Adrenal Stress - the pressures we’re under emotionally every day can make us feel like we’re ready to blow up, compounded by dietary stresses, sleep issues, exercise deficits and ongoing pain or inflammation. Together they can drain this vital set of peanut sized adrenal glands faster than you can replenish them, leading to the point where you can develop thyroid imbalance, weight gain, hypoglycemia (i.e. low blood sugar) and toxic liver and kidney function too.
  11. Inflammation - out of control, inflammation tears you down everywhere faster than you can rebuild and the most stressed tissues, like your knees and hip joints or organs, like your liver, adrenals and kidneys, will pay an extra price. This inflammation is at the root of over 60 degenerative illnesses including all of the top 10, which are only addressed at the symptom level (like smoke) by standard medical care today, never addressing the fire behind those symptoms.
Wouldn’t It Be Great To Know Where Your 11 Biomarkers of Health Are Now?

To evaluate your current level of success in getting and staying well, these 11 Biomarkers are invaluable. So armed with where your chemical machinery has broken down due to stress we can then properly support you with lifestyle mods and customized supplementation.

We use re-tests, perhaps every 3 to 6 months, until you achieve your return to homeostasis with all 11 indicators well balanced. Attaining this balance in fundamental biochemical protection is real prevention-the creation of a version of you not likely to breakdown from the ill effects of stress shown to be the underlying cause of death in 75% of U.S citizens.

Once all 11 of your biomarkers are back in the green wellness zone, then re-tests can be used to provide the health assurance a balanced version of you confers.
